Subrahmanya Sashti is the Skanda Shasti,
that falls in the month of Margashira. Skanda sashti is celebrated
every month on shukla paksha shashti. This fast is dedicated to god
Subramanya. This year, Subramanya Sashti is on Tuesday, 18th December,
2012.
Subrahmanya Sashti is celebrated to
commemorate the victory of Lord Subramanya over Demon Tarakasura. On
this day, God Subramanya is worshiped in the form of five headed snake.
Shankapala is also worshiped on this day. It is auspicious to perform
Subramanya Darshana (visit Skanda temple), Snan (river bath) and Dana
(donation) on this day.

Sashti is celebrated on the Sixth day of Waxing moon period in the hindu lunar
month of Margashira. This festival is dedicated to God Skanda (Subramanya).
This festival mainly observed in southern parts of India i.e in Tamilnadu, Karnataka,
Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
Lord
Skanda is Avatar of God Manmatha. He is the son of God Shiva and Godess
Parvathi. He resides in same kakshya with God Indra. Subramanya is considered
as Handsome and sharper of all the gods. He is the general of gods army and
lord of wars. His vehicle is Mayura (peacock). This god consists of six faces
and he can see in all six directions at once.

Sashti is the day, that marks the victory of God Subramanya over demon
Tarakasura. On this day devotees wake up early in the morning and take ritual
bath and go to Subramanya temple and perform pujas. Daan is also considered
auspicious on this day.

Sashti is the best day to get rid from sarpadosha. It can be done by worshiping
Subramanya on this day and offering milk and other things to the snake pits.
People worship five headed snake and Shankapala (Also a Nag Devata). The one
who observe this vratha relived from their sins, Kalasarpa dosha and skin
diseases.
God
Subramanya is a Brahma chari. Devotees worship bhrhamachri’s on this day.
Bhakshyas made of urad dal offered to them. They offered Vastra and Dakshina.
During His Kalyana God Srinivasa nominated him to invite the audience. The
other names of God Skanda are Kumara Swamy, Murugan, Shanmuka and Kartikeya.
